about the binding Process

What is a Perfect Bound Book?

A perfect bound book is a type of bookbinding method that creates a square spine by gluing the pages together along the spine edge. This method is commonly used for paperback books, magazines, catalogs, and other publications with a higher page count.

Here’s how the perfect binding process works:

  • Page preparation: The pages of the book are printed and trimmed to the final size, typically with consistent margins on all sides.

  • Collating: The individual pages or signatures are collated in the correct reading order, ensuring that the pages are arranged sequentially.

  • Spine preparation: The collated pages are then ground along the spine edge to roughen the surface. This roughness provides a better surface for the glue to adhere to.

  • Application of adhesive: A strong adhesive, usually a flexible and durable glue, is applied to the roughed-up spine edge of the collated pages.

  • Cover attachment: A separate cover, typically made of a heavier paper or cardstock, is wrapped around the collated and glued pages. The cover extends slightly beyond the trimmed pages, providing additional protection.

  • Trimming: Once the glue has dried, the excess edges of the cover and pages are trimmed to create a clean, finished look. This ensures that all sides of the book have a uniform appearance.

The result of perfect binding is a professional-looking book with a flat, square spine. It allows for printing on the spine, making it easy to identify the book title or other relevant information when the books are displayed on a shelf. Perfect bound books can have a higher page count compared to saddle stitch books and provide a more durable and long-lasting binding option.

Why Choose Perfect Bound?

The perfect bound book printing method offers several advantages, which make it a popular choice for various types of publications. Here are some reasons why you might choose perfect binding:

  • Professional appearance: Perfect bound books have a sleek and professional look that is often associated with high-quality publications. The square spine gives them a polished and refined appearance, making them ideal for books, catalogs, magazines, and other materials where aesthetics matter.

  • Suitable for higher page counts: Perfect binding is well-suited for books with a higher page count. Unlike saddle stitch binding, which is more suitable for shorter booklets, perfect binding can handle thicker publications. It allows for binding hundreds of pages together in a single book.

  • Durability: The strong adhesive used in perfect binding creates a solid and durable bond between the pages and the cover. This ensures that the book remains intact even with frequent use, making it suitable for books that will be read and handled multiple times.

  • Printable spine: The wide, flat spine of a perfect bound book provides ample space for printing titles, author names, or other relevant information. This makes it easy to identify the book when it’s displayed on a shelf and contributes to a professional appearance.

  • Flexibility in design: Perfect binding allows for more flexibility in design compared to other binding methods. You have the freedom to include full-colour images, illustrations, and text across the entire width of each page without concerns about stitching or staples getting in the way.

  • Availability of printing options: Perfect bound books can be printed using various printing techniques, including digital printing and offset printing. This allows you to choose the most suitable printing method based on your budget, quantity, and desired print quality.
Things to remember

What you Need to Know.

It’s important to note that perfect binding does have some considerations. It may not lay flat when opened, which can make it challenging to keep the pages open without assistance. Additionally, if your book has a very low page count or if it needs to withstand rough handling or frequent page-turning, other binding methods like saddle stitch or coil binding might be more appropriate.

Ultimately, the choice of the perfect bound book printing method depends on your specific requirements, budget, and the intended use of the publication. Consulting with Print Your Books, we can provide valuable insights and guidance based on your project’s needs.

Set yourself up Right

Set yourself up Right

What file do I supply? Today, most files are supplied as a PDF, alongside the native InDesign files. To set up your design files for perfect bound printing, follow these steps:

  • Determine the final trim size: Decide on the desired dimensions for your printed book. Common sizes include 5.5 x 8.5 inches, 6 x 9 inches, or 8.5 x 11 inches. Make sure your design document is set to the correct dimensions.

  • Set up margins and bleed: Determine the appropriate margin size for your content, keeping in mind the need for sufficient space between the text or images and the trim edge. Additionally, include a bleed area of typically 0.125 inches (3 mm) beyond the trim edge to account for any elements that extend beyond the page. This ensures that there are no white borders after trimming. Adjust your document’s margins and bleed settings accordingly.

  • Organize page order: Arrange your pages in the correct reading order, ensuring they flow logically from start to finish. Consider front matter (title page, copyright page, etc.), table of contents, chapters, and any back matter (appendix, index, etc.). Confirm that your pages are properly sequenced and in the correct orientation.

  • Design the spine: Determine the width of the spine based on the page count and the paper thickness. Consult with your printer or use their guidelines to calculate the spine width accurately. Design the spine with necessary text, such as the book title, author name, and publisher’s logo.

  • Account for safe zones: Ensure that important content, such as text or images, is kept within a safe zone away from the trim edge. This prevents the risk of crucial elements getting trimmed off during the production process.

  • Set up cover design: Design it separately from the interior pages. Include the front cover, back cover, and spine. Consider incorporating relevant artwork, images, titles, author names, and other essential information.
  • Convert fonts to outlines: To avoid font issues during printing, convert your text to outlines or embed the fonts within your design file. This ensures that the text remains intact and is displayed correctly, regardless of the fonts installed on the printing system.

  • Proofread and review: Before sending your files for printing, carefully proofread all text, check for any design inconsistencies or errors, and review the overall layout. It’s essential to ensure that your content is accurate, formatted correctly, and ready for printing.

Remember, it’s crucial to consult with your printer or production team for specific design guidelines and templates they may have for perfect bound printing. They can provide you with precise instructions tailored to their equipment and processes.
